Stock MPI With 406 In Ram

Tech Question

Brandon Charley, Huntington Beach, CA, 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L

I blew a headgasket on my truck and didn’t bother gettingthe block decked or the heads milled, so it blew again. I figure this timeI’ll do it right and take the whole engine out of the truck to have theblock machined, but if I’m going to do all that I want to stroke (406ci) itbefore it goes back in. My question is: Is there any way to use the stockMPI setup with my new motor? For the time being my truck will just be adaily driver and occasional light duty tow rig.

Brandon, first, except that you’ll be doing some towing, I would suggestthat you “lose” the stock intake manifold when you stroke it – it’s reallytough to make any HP with it, the MP 2-Bbl “standard” manifold will make alot more HP. But, for towing, with your stroker crank, it will be just whatthe doctor ordered – a torque monster.

Yes, you can keep the stock JTEC engine controller. You’ll simply have totake one of the approaches used all the time by the rice boys: either get aset of injectors that flow proportionally the same percentage more as thedisplacement increase, or increase the fuel pressure the same way, or somecombination of the two. To get this really right, you’d need a littlechassis dyno time with at least one wide-range O2 sensor, and don’t expectthe part-throttle driveability to be 100% perfect, although it will be OK.The JTEC does have some adaptability built-in, espceially duringpart-throttle, closed-loop operation.
