Unswitched?

I understand the purpose of the ballast
resistor, and the reason power is supplied
directly to the coil during cranking,
but just wondering what the design
reason is for shutting off ignition power
to the ballast resistor during cranking?
Seems like there would be no harm in
allowing a parallel path to the coil. Both
power sources come from the same B+
input to the ignition switch.

I think it boils down to simplicity in the
design and manufacture of the ignition
switch. Doing it “your way” it would be
much more complex to prevent the starter
motor from engaging when you released
the key from “crank” to “run”.
