Weighty Question

0

About 2 years ago, I had a set of reproduction
Polyglas tires installed on my
’69 ’Cuda. Now the wheel weights are
rusty, yet I have several old Mopar wheels
under my deck that have no rust on the
weights. Is there any place that sells
wheel weights that will not rust? If so, I
will buy them.

Yes, a Canadian company, “Plombco,”
makes plastic-coated wheel weights sold
under the trade name “Plasteel.” Perfect
Equipment Co., out of Murfreesboro, TN,
makes “Wheel protectors,” also plastic
coated. There may be others.

Lead wheel weights, which, obviously
cannot rust, were “almost” outlawed by
the EPA in 2009. The ban did not pass,
but several states instituted a ban of their
own, they are: CA, WA, MD, ME, VT, MN,
IL, and NY. Many weight vendors saw the
handwriting on the wall and changed their
production to steel entirely.

They (Pb weights) are still readily available
on eBay, etc. Any pollution, real or
imaginary, aside, wheel weights made
of lead are preferred, especially on steel
wheels (which usually require more
weights than a cast alloy wheel) because,
for the same weight they are smaller
(because of greater density, steel is typically
490 lbs. per cu. ft., where lead is
just over 700).
