I have been trying to get my fuel gauge
working on my 65 Dodge Dart GT. I

purchased an OE fuel sending unit and
a replacement fuel gauge (don’t think it
was NOS) from two vendors at annual
Mopar swap meet at Big Daddy Don
Garlits’s in Ocala, Florida last year.
Once installed the gauge started to
work then shortly after stopped. The
ground is good but I did notice repairs
to the fuel sending unit wire that made
me wonder if I should replace that as
well. Unfortunately, I can’t find that part
online even with the Mopar part number.
What I found in my manual that it’s 18
gauge. Can I use any 18-gauge wire or
is there a special ohm resistance wire
for that application? I have checked
several Mopar NOS and reproduction
companies for that part but no luck.

Any old parts store stranded wire is
fine. Nothing special. You can check the
sender with a cheap-O ohmmeter:
FUEL LEVEL RESISTANCE READINGS, Ω
FULL 7 – 13
HALF 37 – 45
EMPTY 88 – 97
Some ’71-72 Mopars were equipped with
this restrictor, which restrained the engine
in the event of left engine mount failure.
Part numbers were:
1971-’72 B-body, smallblock: 3466526
1971-’72 B-Body, big-block: 3466724
1969-’72 Fury (C-body), small block:
3466535 & 3466538 (need both)
1969-’72 Fury (C-body), big block:
3466715
Later models did not require these, as
they had spool-type mounts, which were
fail-safe.
