Pump It Backwards
I have a 1968 Barracuda, base,
273 2-Bbl. Someone swapped it to a ’72
- I want to restore it to dead stock, and
I do have the original engine, and I found
a radiator for use with the cast-iron water
pump. Can I use the alternator mounting
hardware from the 340 on the original 273?
No. Almost
everything on
the front of the
engine changed in 1970 when the aluminum
water pump was
introduced. See drawing at top of page
for the pre-’69 iron-pump setup. Also
remember that pre-’72, dampers and
crank pulleys used an asymmetrical bolt
pattern (1 hole offset).
