Hold It Down

What does a correct Hemi distributor
clamp look like? I have seen a version
with a notch, and some without. I know
that you know!

Here’s the deal: When the 2G Hemi was
released in mid-’64, the crossram version
had a notch cut in the clamp to increase
clearance to the manifold. This was not
required on the 2X4-Bbl inline ‘66-up
street version, but nobody in Chrysler
Engineering bothered to change the bill
of materials, so the ’64-style continued on
street Hemis until mid-’70, when a sharpeyed
slide-rule guy noticed the wasted
machining operation, and specified the
garden-variety B/RB version for all street
Hemis from that date forward.
