My Main Man

0

I have a problem with the
thrust bearing not going into the upper and
lower caps on a 1968 440 I am working on.
In the pictures you can see the difference
between the new and old bearings. The
upper main area has been repaired years
ago. The lower cap looks like it has been
replaced because it does not match up to
the other caps as far as the numbers go. I
know if I slam the new bearings home they
most likely will bust. Is it possible Clevite
put the wrong bearing in the package, do
I get the side of the new bearing cut down
to fit, or did someone make a change that I
have no way of correcting?

Simple, just use the correct ’72-down
main bearings. The thrust bearing you’re
trying to install is ’73-up!
