On Top Of Ol’ Smokey

0

1970 Challenger, 440. I am having
problems with burning oil at startup and on
a steeper downhill slope, a cloud of blue
smoke, It goes away when accelerating or just normal running. What does this sound like to you?

Valve stem seals brittle or very worn
valve guides are usually the cause of
startup smoke. The downhill deal aspect
isn’t as easy to diagnose. I’m thinking oil
overfilled, PCV pullover (poorly baffled
aftermarket valve covers), or….?
Anyway, fix it soon, or it’ll be a
carboned-up mess.

All factory valve covers have PCV
baffles. That’s not always true with
aftermarket covers. If missing,
PCV pullover (high oil consumption,
smoke, knocking, carbon) will result.
