A HIGHER STANDARD – Mopar Action Article Extra

Measuring the ’68 Hemi against the Mopar Action Reference Restoration yardstick, we noticed a few areas where we feel the level of correctness falls short. We point them out not to knock anybody, but as a guide for your own restoration information. Be advised that the ’68 differs from ’69 and ’70 Hemis in terms of detail. You can blow up these images for a better view of the following details:

  • The first thing we (a biggie) see is the later Hemi engine color. Chrysler went to the more reddish-orange paint around April-May ’69. The earlier Hemi paint (’66-’69-1/2) was a more yellowish-orange.
  • The single pulley alternator is incorrect. We wonder if it really is a 2875549 Hemi-only unit.
  • Another no-no are the Allen bolts for the intake hardware. Those bolts are for ‘66/’67 ONLY.
  • The sparkplug wire holder at left front of intake should be all orange.
  • The power steering gearbox, coupler and steering shaft all should be black. Even worse, it appears this stuff is painted cast-blast silver.
  • The power steering cap should be painted.
  • The wiper motor is too shiny.
  • The power steering high pressure hose looks silver plated.
  • There should not be an aluminum band around the heater hoses, and the proper heater hose bracket is missing.
  • Lynch Rd fender tags were not covered in body paint. They just had a light mist if anything.
  • Another big error is the missing dash pot that came with 4-speeds. It should be mounted on the rear of the rear carb
