Tech QuestionBrandon Charley, Huntington Beach, CA, 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L I blew a headgasket on my truck and didn't bother getting the block decked or the heads milled, so it blew again. I figure this time I'll do it right and take the whole engine out of the truck to have the block machined, but if I'm going to do all that I want to stroke (406ci) it before it goes back in. My question is: Is there any way to use the stock MPI setup with my new motor? For the time being my truck will just be a daily driver and occasional light duty tow rig. Brandon, first, except that you'll be doing some towing, I would suggest that you "lose" the stock intake manifold when you stroke it - it's really tough to make any HP with it, the MP 2-Bbl "standard" manifold will make a lot more HP. But, for towing, with your stroker crank, it will be just what the doctor ordered - a torque monster. Yes, you can keep the stock JTEC engine controller. You'll simply have to take one of the approaches used all the time by the rice boys: either get a set of injectors that flow proportionally the same percentage more as the displacement increase, or increase the fuel pressure the same way, or some combination of the two. To get this really right, you'd need a little chassis dyno time with at least one wide-range O2 sensor, and don't expect the part-throttle driveability to be 100% perfect, although it will be OK. The JTEC does have some adaptability built-in, espceially during part-throttle, closed-loop operation. Rick
