can you change gear sets in an 8-1/4"? I was wondering 'cause I've got an 8-1/4 with 3.23 and want to go higher.
Sure, super-easy in fact! The 8.25 and 9.25" axles are a dream to work on. With experience, it can be done in 2-1/2 hours, but be sure you have a diff bearing adjuster tool, etc.
And I agree, with gas at $3+, I'd go higher, maybe all the way to 2.76:1. (2.45 was made but requires a different differential).
BTW, you have 3.21:1 now.
